Going on safari
Safari is the Swahili word for âjourneyâ but in English it is used to describe game viewing, usually in Africa. On safari, with cameras poised, you can hope to capture images of the âbig fiveâ â lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros, and buffalo. If you also see hippopotamus, zebra, and giraffe, the experience is complete. There is truly nothing quite as exciting.
Safaris are â thankfully â no longer about game-hunting, as they once were, but firmly about conservation. Finding a safari company that operates responsibly and ethically will mean you are contributing in some way to conservation or social programs and giving back to the communities you visit.
Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa are the most popular countries for safaris, but donât discount lesser known â but equally wonderful â destinations like Malawi.
My only African safari has been to Kenya with luxury travel company Abercrombie & Kent (A&K), taking in the Rift Valley and Masai Mara. It remains one of the most memorable trips of my life. I was confident that through the work of Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy (AKP; www.abercrombiekent.com.au/philanthropy), the local people were supported by sustainable projects that help create jobs, giving them both a personal and financial interest in preserving the wonderful places in which they live. A&K Philanthropy has more than 40 projects in 24 countries, covering everything from scientists working in seabird habitats in Antarctica to supporting a womenâs co-op in Zambia that runs a bicycle repair shop, enabling the female mechanics to improve the education, health, and livelihoods of themselves and their families.
